3mm, 4mm or 5mm: Which Mouse Pad Thickness Should You Pick?

3mm, 4mm ou 5mm : Quelle épaisseur de tapis de souris choisir ?

When buying new gear, we tend to fixate on the artwork, the mouse pad size or the texture. But one spec slips through the cracks far too often: thickness. At PopMyPad, we design our products knowing that a few millimeters make a drastic difference to your joint comfort and how the pad feels in game. Here's how to pick the right thickness for your ergonomic desk mouse pad.

Thin pads (1mm to 2mm / 0.04" to 0.08"): direct feedback

Very thin pads are usually the pick of purists who want to feel the hardness of their desk.

  • Pros: an extremely firm surface that stops the mouse from sinking under heavy pressure. Very easy to transport.
  • Cons: forgives nothing about your desk (a single crumb underneath will make itself known). Very low joint comfort over long sessions.

The esports standard (3mm to 4mm / 0.12" to 0.16"): the sweet spot

This is the king of thicknesses. Most of our XXL mouse pads land in this range, because it hits the perfect compromise.

  • Pros: smooths out small desk imperfections effectively. Gives excellent wrist support without creating any "bounce" under the mouse. It's the ideal balance between firmness for precision and give for joint health.

Thick pads (5mm / 0.2" and up): absolute comfort

Extra-thick (heavy) models are built for maximum comfort and rough environments.

  • Pros: if you play LAN tournaments on beat-up tables covered in deep scratches, a 5mm (0.2") pad flattens the surface completely. It's also peak comfort if you deal with wrist pain.
  • Cons: if you have a heavy hand (a heavy clench grip), your mouse skates may sink slightly into the foam, creating unexpected resistance (higher dynamic friction).

Assess the quality of your current desk and any pain you're dealing with to make the right call.
