The short answer
You wash a mouse pad by hand, in lukewarm water (86 °F / 30 °C at most), with a drop of mild soap, rubbing gently by hand or with a non-abrasive sponge. Rinse in clean water, press without wringing, then let it dry flat, in the open air, for 24 hours, rubber base facing up. Never a washing machine, never a tumble dryer, never a radiator.
The method, step by step
- Dust it dry first. Shake the pad, then go over it with a dry microfibre cloth. Many "dirty" pads are only dusty and do not need water at all.
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water. 86 °F (30 °C) at most. Above that, the glue that bonds the cloth to the rubber base starts to give.
- A drop of mild soap. Castile soap, neutral dish soap or shampoo. Nothing else.
- Rub by hand, along the length, without working one spot. A soft sponge, smooth side, is fine; if the green side scratches, do not use it.
- Rinse thoroughly in clean water. Leftover soap makes the surface tacky and slows the glide.
- Press, do not wring. Rolling the pad in a towel and pressing on it removes most of the water without deforming the base.
- Dry flat, 24 hours. On a flat surface, rubber base up so it dries first. No direct sun, no radiator.
What destroys a mouse pad

The method changes with the material
This is the point most guides forget. A PU leather desk mat is not washed like a cloth pad.

Common stains
- Coffee or soda. Blot immediately with paper, without rubbing. Then lukewarm soapy water on the spot. Sugar left in place creates a permanently tacky patch.
- Finger grease. A drop of diluted dish soap, cloth, rinse. The most common stain and the easiest.
- Pen ink. Dab with a barely damp cloth. Do not use alcohol: it sets the ink and bleaches around it.
- Musty smell. Almost always incomplete drying. Wash again and dry for 48 hours this time.
How often should you wash it?
A pad used daily for office work is washed every two to three months. In heavy gaming use, where the forearm rests on the surface constantly, count on every month.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put a mouse pad in the washing machine?
No, not even on a delicate cycle. The spin cycle separates the rubber base from the cloth, and the pad never lies perfectly flat again. It is the number one cause of ruined pads.
How long does a mouse pad take to dry?
24 hours flat, at room temperature, for a 3 mm cloth pad. Allow 48 hours for thick felt or a large XXL format.
Can you use a steam cleaner?
No. Steam is far above 104 °F (40 °C) and attacks the bond between the surface and the base directly.
Does washing damage the print?
Not with lukewarm water and mild soap: the ink is set in the fibre. It is chlorine products and hot water that fade it.
My pad is new and smells of rubber — is that normal?
Yes. It is the smell of the base; it disappears in a few days in the open air. No need to wash it for that.
When to replace rather than wash
A wash does not fix everything. Change your pad when the edges fray, when the base no longer holds on the desk, or when the surface is shiny in places — at that stage the fibre is crushed and the glide will not come back.
